First of all, we all know about natural resources such as water, air, soil, etc. These are naturally occurring substances. Mineral resources are elements found in Earth’s crust in the form of solid, liquid, and sometimes in gaseous states. These are of economical interest and used in our day-to-day life.
So, let’s know about some of these mineral resources which are used on a large scale.
1. COAL
Average production ( per year ) - 7.4 billion tonnes
Coal is one of the most used minerals in the world. There are around 100 trillion tonnes of coal reserves all around the world.
According to an estimate, this much amount of coal reserves can sustain the world’s needs for another 150 years even at the present excavation rates.
The leading producer of coal in the world is China. Although there is some declination in the production still it is on top. After China, India is the second most producer with a production of 730.3 million tonnes.
2. IRON
Average production ( per year ) - 4.6 billion tonnes
Iron is the second most mined mineral in the world. That is obvious because of its use.
Every industry requires iron ore to manufacture stainless steel or some other industrial products. Recently, the worldwide production of Iron has increased significantly due to its requirements. In the construction industry, it is required for the manufacturing of reinforced steel bars.
3. BAUXITE
Average Production ( per year ) - 289 million tonnes
Bauxite is an ore of Aluminium. There are many fluctuations in the production of Bauxite. In 2013, it reached to value of 299 million tonnes.
The largest producers of Bauxite are:-
• India
• Guinea
• Brazil
• China
• Australia
4. PHOSPHATE ROCK
Average Production ( per year ) - 276 million tonnes
Phosphorus is extracted from the Phosphate Rock. It is found in nature in the form of sediment deposits formed by the action of Weathering. It has also great significance in many industries. We all use matchsticks in our homes. It is red Phosphorus which is mounted on the adjacent sides of the box, helps in burning the flames.
Phosphate is also used in the manufacturing of fertilizers for agricultural purposes.
China is the leading producer of Phosphate in the world.
5. GYPSUM
Average Production ( per year ) - 267.1 million tonnes
Gypsum has a very wide range of use in every industry. It is used in plastering work, in cement, chalks, and drywalls.
After 2012, there is a rapid increase in the production of gypsum.
Iran is the second-largest producer of Gypsum followed by China. According to data, around 50 percent of the world’s total reserves are located in North America and Europe.
