A Dam is basically a reservoir built across the river to restricts its flow. The main purpose of doing that is to retain water and divert it to the location where this water is required. Dams are mainly used for irrigation purposes where rainwater is not sufficient for cultivating crops. The other major purpose that the dams are used is in generating hydroelectricity. It is the cleanest and natural form of electricity where we used the potential of difference in height created by a dam on a river.
When we say about the biggest dam, there are many different parameters on the basis of which we will classify them like on the basis of electricity generation, on the basis of water storage capacity, etc.
So in this article, we will know about them on the basis of reservoir capacities.
1. KARIBA DAM
Capacity - 185 billion cubic meters
On the basis of storage capacity, it is the world’s biggest dam in the world. It is built over thez Zambei river situated between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
On the upstream side, it forms a lake known as Lake Kariba. The length of this lake is 280 km and the cross-sectional width is 32 km. Around 60% of the power for Zambia and Zimbabwe is meet by this Dam only.
2. BRATSK DAM
Capacity - 169.27 billion cubic meters
This is the second largest dam in this world. This one is type of concrete gravity dam.
This dam is built over the Angara river located in Siberia, Russia. It is a multipurpose reservoir used for irrigation, hydropower, fisheries. There is a separate highway and rail line built over it for land transport.
3. AKOSOMBO DAM
Capacity - 144 billion cubic meters
It is the third biggest dam in the world on the basis of water storage. It is built over the Volta river located in southeast Ghana. It is a hydroelectric dam.
This dam had a power output of 912 Megawatts which was later on extended to 1020 Megawatts in 2006.
Aluminium industry is the primary consumer of the hydropower generated from this dam.
4. DANIEL JOHNSON DAM
Capacity - 139.8 billion cubic meters
It is a multi-arch buttress dam built over the Manicouagan river situated in Quebec, Canada. The length of the dam is 214 m having a width of 3 m at the top and 22.5 m at the base. This is constructed with 2.2 billion cubic meters of concrete. Power generation at this dam is around 1596 Megawatts.
5. GURI DAM
Capacity - 135 billion cubic meters
It is a concrete gravity dam built over the Caroni river located in Bolivar, Venezuela.
The length of the dam is 1300 m and has a height of 16 m.
The dam is constructed with 6 million cubic meters of concrete.
These are top five biggest dams in the world so thanks for giving your precious time on reading our article.
